Drying a Starfish

Starfish can be dried by first mixing equal portions baking soda and table salt. Apply a thin layer of this mixture to the inside bottom of a shallow, small cardboard box. Then put that box aside for later use. In a casserole dish, combine one part “for home use” bleach and three parts water together. You will be needing enough of this solution for submerging the starfish completely. Place the starfish in your bleach solution then let it soak for one minute.

Now, scoop your starfish from the solution using a slotted spoon. Transfer the starfish to the cardboard box, specifically on top of your salt mixture. Use a small piece of rock for weighing each arm of the starfish down. This way, the appendages will be kept from curling up when they become dry. The box should be placed outdoors for forty-eight hours in direct sunlight. Once the starfish has dried out, treat it with some aerosol sealant.

You need to carefully follow the directions specified on the packaging of the product. The same method can also be used to preserve sand dollars. You can use the dried starfish as a home décor, craft project, beach wedding décor, collection item or lovely gift.
