Drying a Starfish

Starfish can be dried by first mixing equal portions baking soda and table salt. Apply a thin layer of this mixture to the inside bottom of a shallow, small cardboard box. Then put that box aside for later use. In a casserole dish, combine one part “for home use” bleach and three parts water together. You will be needing enough of this solution for submerging the starfish completely. Place the starfish in your bleach solution then let it soak for one minute.

Now, scoop your starfish from the solution using a slotted spoon. Transfer the starfish to the cardboard box, specifically on top of your salt mixture. Use a small piece of rock for weighing each arm of the starfish down. This way, the appendages will be kept from curling up when they become dry. The box should be placed outdoors for forty-eight hours in direct sunlight. Once the starfish has dried out, treat it with some aerosol sealant.

You need to carefully follow the directions specified on the packaging of the product. The same method can also be used to preserve sand dollars. You can use the dried starfish as a home décor, craft project, beach wedding décor, collection item or lovely gift.

Hunting Techniques

Starfish facts indicate that these animals have a generalist diet which means that can eat almost anything from clams and snails to dying fishes. But with the speed of these starfishes on the bottom of the ocean, one would definitely wonder how these animals can catch or hunt their prey. Starfishes begin hunting their prey through their keen senses. They can actually detect the presence of a prey’s odor. So when their senses detect prey, the legs begin to act More...

Handling Alive Starfish

In order to handle a life starfish properly, you need to gently pick it up and not bend or break its arms, which may be somewhat fragile and small on a number of species. Although starfishes are popular for their regeneration capabilities, you must always hold them very cautiously to minimize any possible damage. You have to wrap a moist towel around the starfish or put it in a handy marine environment (a container full of seawater), in case it More...

Modern Uses

Based on starfish facts, these animals are definitely very useful in keeping the equilibrium and balance in the food chain under the sea. These animals have a very wide preference when it comes to their diet which is why they can help control the number of opportunist organisms in the oceans. But aside from their usefulness in the environment, there are also other uses of these starfishes by humans. A common use of starfishes today is in the seawater aquariums. More...

Starfish Facts on Environmental Dangers and Threats

According to zoologists who study starfishes and their impact to the environment, these sea creatures have a very important role in the oceans. They may look like decorations in the ocean floor but they are actually considered as keystone species because they contribute in creating balance of species under the sea which can be done through predation. With the starfish facts that people already know, it will be a good start to know what these animals do so that people More...

From the time that starfish species were first discovered and studied by humans until today, a wider range of information are already gathered pertaining to these creatures. Researching starfishes is not an easy thing to do since there are thousands of species that are still living. In order to understand the evolution of this creature, researchers would More...
