Feeding a Starfish

Nowadays, marine scientists call starfish “sea stars”, since they are actually not fish, but echinoderms. There are more than two thousand species of sea stars. Most of them have five arms, but others are blessed with up to forty arms. The stomach and mouth of the starfish are located on its bottom. These animals usually push their stomachs from their bodies, wrapping them around the food for digestion. When learning how to feed a starfish, identify what type your starfish is. If you do not know the variety you own, ask at a local aquarium supply store, read reference books or research online.

Find out what is eaten by your starfish. Some small species feed on naturally growing plants from the aquarium, including algae, while others are either omnivorous or carnivorous. Use long-handled tweezers to put chopped squid, mussels, cockles or prawns close to the starfish. The creature will subsequently move above the food and have it digested. Your starfish must be fed every two-three days.

Reduce the frequency of your feeding if the starfish does not like to eat. Feed your pet more often if it seems to eat voraciously. Put the starfish above the food in case your aquarium is home to other fish, which may steal the food.

Preserving a Starfish

The first thing that you will do when preserving the starfish is cleaning it. Use a little mild soap and warm water for washing the starfish. Soak the animal for about forty-eight hours in rubbing alcohol. You do not have to clean the creature first, but you may choose to do so. If rubbing alcohol is not what you prefer to use, you may alternatively use a mixture of five parts water and one part formaldehyde. This solution will give More...

Handling Alive Starfish

In order to handle a life starfish properly, you need to gently pick it up and not bend or break its arms, which may be somewhat fragile and small on a number of species. Although starfishes are popular for their regeneration capabilities, you must always hold them very cautiously to minimize any possible damage. You have to wrap a moist towel around the starfish or put it in a handy marine environment (a container full of seawater), in case it More...

Hunting Techniques

But with the speed of these starfishes on the bottom of the ocean, one would definitely wonder how these animals can catch or hunt their prey. Starfishes begin hunting their prey through their keen senses. They can actually detect the presence of a prey’s odor. So when their senses detect prey, the legs begin to act More...

Spines of Starfish Facts

If you find out about starfish facts, you will know that not all species of starfishes have spines on their backs. But majority of the living species have spines which are major parts of their exterior anatomy. These spines are extensions of the external dermis of the starfish which are composed of calcium carbonate. The spines may also be of different color than the rest of the body. Their tips can be sharp and pointed while others can be curved More...

Researching about Starfish Facts

There will be no starfish facts that people know today if not for the researches and studies done by scientists, zoologists, and biologists. From the time that starfish species were first discovered and studied by humans until today, a wider range of information are already gathered pertaining to these creatures. Researching starfishes is not an easy thing to do since there are thousands of species that are still living. In order to understand the evolution of this creature, researchers would More...

Starfish Facts on Asexual Methods of Reproduction

But the asexual reproduction of starfishes is definitely a very interesting topic especially to kids. The asexual process of preproduction by starfishes can be accomplished through two methods.
