Locating a Starfish

If you want to find a starfish, go to a nearby rocky beach. Typically, starfish stick to underwater rocks near the seashore. This is the best area to locate these wonderful marine creatures. It is a good idea to look forward to low tide. It is at low tide that the sea reveals a lot of rocks, which have been underwater. In addition, it leaves behind rock pools where there is a vast variety of sea creatures. The best time to search for starfish is low tide, since this will allow you to access their habitats more easily.

Search for any bright colors. Although starfish have the same texture as their habitat, they can usually be spotted easily by their colorful and noticeable contrast to the background. These animals are often purple, orange, yellow, or red. They can significantly vary in the number of arms, pattern, size, shape and color. Now, try touching the starfish to find out how it feels. Also, touch its minute tube feet located on the arms.

These feet are used for moving around. When you explore the sea at low tide, watch your step to avoid disturbing the ecosystem or stepping on several creatures that rest underfoot. Doing so will also keep you from hurting yourself.

Handling Alive Starfish

In order to handle a life starfish properly, you need to gently pick it up and not bend or break its arms, which may be somewhat fragile and small on a number of species. Although starfishes are popular for their regeneration capabilities, you must always hold them very cautiously to minimize any possible damage. You have to wrap a moist towel around the starfish or put it in a handy marine environment (a container full of seawater), in case it More...

Regeneration and Self Cloning

In general, starfish regenerate by way of a three-stage process. Firstly, the repair stage heals the creature’s exposed wound. This phase is followed by the regenerative stage, in which the body of the echinoderm produces new cells and begins new growth. The final phase is referred to as the advanced regenerative stage, during which significant cell proliferation starts. Growth factors, which are neurally derived, determine the processes responsible for the formation of patterns during the last stage. If anything intervenes More...

Starfish Facts on Asexual Methods of Reproduction

Starfishes are animals that are known to be able to multiply through both the sexual and the asexual processes. Based on starfish facts, not all species of starfishes can asexually create an offspring. There are species that strictly multiply through the sexual methods. But the asexual reproduction of starfishes is definitely a very interesting topic especially to kids. The asexual process of preproduction by starfishes can be accomplished through two methods. These are autotomy and fission. Autotomy is the process More...
