External Threats

The greatest threat to starfish is similar one which endangers most other seawater animals: human beings. Starfish needs clean and clear water as its habitat. When humans permit water pollutants to flow into the seas and oceans, these species can get extremely unhealthy and even die. In addition, there are several cultures that allow the eating of starfish. In case too many starfishes are brought away from any area, these beautiful seawater creatures will be deprived of the opportunity to multiply and worse, they can completely disappear. This threatening activity is referred to as “over harvesting”. We are unfortunate that most of their species continue to thrive and new species are always discovered as scientists keep on harmlessly exploring their habitats.

Global warming is believed to be a contributory factor to the disappearance of some starfish habitats. Most starfishes live in sea coral beds, which are unfortunately not growing as they must due to warmer waters. Although scientific researchers have never yet clearly defined the effect of global climate change on starfishes, the obvious harm of warmer waters is the decrease in the amount of food sources that these creatures basically need. Primarily, starfish feeds on snails, mollusks and clams. All of these animals tend to multiply less fast in warm temperatures.

Body Cooling

All types of living organisms will always have a suitable environment where they can survive. Slight changes in the environment will be acceptable because of an organism’s ability to adapt. But when the environment gets too extreme, the organism’s adaptation mechanisms may not work anymore. Temperature plays a vital role when animals choose their habitat. Starfishes live under the sea but they can be affected by water temperature levels too. Based on starfish facts gathered by researchers, starfishes can start More...

Starfish Facts on its Importance in Nature

A lot of people see starfishes as cute animals by the seashore that you can pick up and take pictures of. But there is actually more to these creatures than just their appearances and colors. Not a lot of people understand starfish facts especially about their contribution to nature. Just like any other animal in the marine kingdom, they contribute a lot in Eco diversity and in keeping the food chain running. Scientists and biologists actually called starfishes as keystone More...

Starfish Facts about their Habitat

People who want to learn more starfish facts should also look into the habitat and the areas around the world where starfishes can be found. One key fact that you should definitely know is that starfishes will never survive when not in water. You may see a few of them on the beach but if they do not get into the sea soon, they will have a major electrolyte imbalance within their bodies. This is directly related to the starfish’s More...

Central Disc of Starfish

Starfish have the capability of re-growing partial bodies or lost arms, after they experience an injury. They typically do this to either reproduce or heal wounds. If you cut a sea star into five sections, each containing a portion of its central disc and an original arm, five new sea stars will be born. For the most part, a sea star can never clone itself except when the targeted clone has a section of the central disc. As the name More...

Feeding a Starfish

Nowadays, marine scientists call starfish “sea stars”, since they are actually not fish, but echinoderms. There are more than two thousand species of sea stars. Most of them have five arms, but others are blessed with up to forty arms. The stomach and mouth of the starfish are located on its bottom. These animals usually push their stomachs from their bodies, wrapping them around the food for digestion. When learning how to feed a starfish, identify what type your starfish More...

Anatomy of the Starfish Facts

A lot of starfish facts talk about the anatomy of this sea creature. The shape of the common starfish which is what people perceive as a star is already interesting as it is. But if you look into the structure both internal and external parts of the starfish, you will really be fascinated by this animal. Just like humans, the starfish has different skin layers such as the epidermis and the dermis. But they also have an epithelium layer where More...

Starfish Facts on Movement

Starfishes are definitely not popular for their speed. Majority of the species of starfishes can actually just cover a distance of less than 10 inches in a single minute. Even if their speed when moving is not something that might interest the people, the method on how they transfer from one place to another is certainly fascinating. These are some of the starfish facts that many people want to know more about. If you take a look at the underside More...
